Day 1: Nouakchott

Nouakchott

Arrival at your convenience in Nouakchott the capital city of Mauritania. One of our guides will provide a pick up from the airport to your conformable hotel to spend a night.

Day 2: Nouakchott – Terjit – Atar – Chinguiti

Chinguiti

After breakfast at your hotel, depart for Terjit Oasis within the Sahara Desert. Feel free to stop anytime during your journey to take pictures of the picturesque landscapes around you. After a lunch break at a camp in Terjit Oasis, you will drive into Chinguetti via the city of Atar. You will arrive in time to watch the most astonishing sunset from the huge dunes of Chinguetti. Then, you can enjoy local nomadic music in Chinguetti. After dinner, watch a dance performed by women nomads.

Day 3: Chinguitti – Choum – Iron ore train

After breakfast, embark on a drive to the UNESCO World Heritage site of Chinguetti, a revered city in Islam. Explore its library and various historical monuments, including the iconic Friday Mosque of Chinguetti, a symbol of national pride for Mauritania. Along the way, make a stop at Amougjar to marvel at prehistoric paintings dating back 5000 years. As you continue your journey, pass by the enchanting oasis of Azougui, where you can indulge in a refreshing tea break if time permits.

The train does not have fixed departure and can depart anywhere between from 6:00pm to 11:00pm

Day 4: Nouadhibou

Nouadhibou

The train arrives in Nouadhibou, Mauritania’s second city, between 8:00 AM and 11:00 AM. Upon arrival, proceed to the hotel for a refreshing shower and some rest before embarking on a city exploration. Enjoy lunch at a local restaurant in town, then make your way to Cabano Beach for relaxation and to soak in the beauty of the sea. Here, marvel at the skeletal remains of the largest fish ever caught in Mauritania.

Day 5: Nouadhibou – Nouakchott

Nouakchott

After breakfast at your hotel, prepare for a lengthy 480 km drive. Along the way, make stops for breaks and photo opportunities to capture the stunning scenery. Upon arrival in Nouakchott, depending on availability, visit the museum and the fish market. In the evenings, witness the arrival of fishermen bringing in their daily catch on their distinct sea canoes, identifiable by their colorful hand-painted hulls. Take some time to immerse yourself in the lifestyle of the fishermen and explore their surroundings

Important Things Bring

If you have specific medication that you take, please bring enough of that medication with you and ensure it is in your carry-on in case of lost luggage. Sometimes it is hard to find certain medication in Mauritania, unless you have time to order them and wait a few days for them to arrive. Therefore, it is crucial to ensure you have those medications with you.

  2. Sleeping bag as the train is cold during the night
  3. clothes for cold and warm
  • A lighter is essential for burning trash in the desert, such as toilet paper, to avoid pollution.
  • A reusable water jug to store your mineral water in, to avoid the use of several plastic water bottles and reduce pollution.
  • Bank cards that work in Mauritania are MasterCard and Visa. ATMs are only available in Nouakchott. So, if you plan to buy souvenirs, make sure to exchange some cash or use the ATM in Nouakchott before entering the country.
